Born Paul Mbenna, Mr Paul is a pioneering figure in the Tanzanian Bongo Flava and R&B scene, best known for bringing a smooth, melodic vocal style to the East African music landscape in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Originally from the Songea Region, he began his musical journey in 1995 as a founding member of the “R&B trio 4 Krewz Flava.” Inspired by American groups like “Boyz II Men,” the trio gained fame for their sophisticated English a cappella performances at nightclubs and beauty pageants.
Mr Paul’s transition to a solo artist saw him collaborate with Tanzania's legendary producers, Master J and P Funk Majani. He dominated the airwaves with classic hits like "Gozi Gozi" (1998) and "Buzi" (2002), the latter featuring Inspectah Haroun. His debut album, “Ndani ya Luv,” remains a cultural staple, featuring the iconic ballad "Zuwena," which resonated across Burundi, Kenya, and Uganda. Despite his regional fame, there is no official affiliation between Mr Paul and Sony Music; his career was primarily built through independent Tanzanian labels like MJ Records and Bongo Records.
Around 2008, Mr Paul relocated to Australia, where he shifted his focus toward education and community service. He earned a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Melbourne and currently works as a professional in the New South Wales government. While he is no longer in the mainstream industry, he remains active in the Sydney arts scene, performing casually with the “Okapi Guitar Band,” preserving the legacy of the original Bongo Flava sound.
